The Punisher: One Last Kill, Marvel Studios’ third Special Presentation, premiered on Disney+ this week, delivering 45 minutes of unapologetic violence as Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) escapes his apartment and embarks on a brutal rampage against New York’s Gnucci crime family. The release follows the season 2 finale of Daredevil: Born Again, creating a stark contrast between Castle’s antiheroic vengeance and Matt Murdock’s (Charlie Cox) moral restraint.

The Special Presentation arrives just after Daredevil: Born Again’s conclusion, where Murdock’s refusal to kill Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio) and Bullseye (Wilson Bethel) frustrated many viewers. The Punisher: One Last Kill offers a cathartic alternative, allowing fans to indulge in Castle’s ultraviolent approach to justice.

Frank Castle’s Brutal Escape and Rampage

Director Reinaldo Marcus Green and Jon Bernthal, who co-wrote the project, set the tone immediately. The opening sequence features graphic violence, including a homeless man’s dog being thrown under a truck and women being beaten on the street. Castle, however, remains detached, haunted by PTSD-induced hallucinations—including a vision of Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll), Murdock’s girlfriend.

Castle’s mission begins when his apartment is attacked, shaking him from his hallucinations. He then embarks on a violent spree, targeting the Gnucci crime family and saving Bubbles (Andre Royo) from The Wire and a young girl reminiscent of his deceased daughter. The Special Presentation wastes no time, diving straight into Castle’s relentless killing spree.

Daredevil’s Redemption vs. The Punisher’s Vengeance

While Daredevil: Born Again explores Matt Murdock’s struggle with Catholic guilt and his belief in redemption, The Punisher: One Last Kill offers the opposite approach. Murdock’s refusal to kill Kingpin and Bullseye—despite their crimes—frustrated some viewers, leading to memes suggesting he would have opposed the Avengers in Endgame.

The Punisher’s Special Presentation serves as a direct counterpoint to Murdock’s moral restraint. Castle’s actions are unapologetically violent, providing a stark contrast to Daredevil’s redemptive arc. The Special Presentation is a self-contained story, with no plans for further installments.

"What we have here is the extreme opposite of Murdock’s approach to ending the cycle of violence in New York."

The Punisher: One Last Kill is Marvel’s third Special Presentation, following Werewolf by Night and Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. The Special Presentation is co-written by Bernthal and Green, who previously collaborated on the 2017 Punisher series.
