The Trump administration has escalated its opposition to harm reduction services for individuals using illicit drugs. In an open letter dated April 24, the federal agency responsible for addiction and mental health policy issued a stern warning to its grantees.
The letter explicitly prohibits the use of federal funds to purchase harm reduction supplies such as:
- Sterile syringes
- Pipes
- Test strips for detecting fentanyl, xylazine, and medetomidine
The directive, addressed to recipients of federal grants, underscores the administration’s stance against policies aimed at reducing drug-related harm.
