President Donald Trump has once again publicly demanded the firing of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, this time over a joke Kimmel made at the White House Correspondents Dinner (WHCD) just days before an alleged shooter targeted the event.
On Thursday, Trump took to Truth Social to criticize Kimmel and ABC, writing:
"When is ABC Fake News Network firing seriously unfunny Jimmy Kimmel, who incompetently presides over one of the Lowest Rated shows on Television? People are angry. It better be soon!!!"
Disney, which owns ABC, has remained silent in response to Trump’s latest call for Kimmel’s removal. The company has not issued a statement addressing the controversy.
Kimmel’s Controversial Joke at WHCD
The dispute stems from a joke Kimmel made during a WHCD sketch aired on April 29, just days before a gunman opened fire outside the White House. In the sketch, Kimmel—who was not the host of this year’s dinner—imagined what jokes he might have delivered if he had been asked to perform.
Among his remarks, Kimmel targeted President Trump, saying:
"If I bruised President Donald Trump’s ego, it’ll only make your hands look less disgusting."
He also mocked First Lady Melania Trump, stating:
"Look at Melania, so beautiful. Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow."
This year’s WHCD did not feature a traditional comedian. Instead, mentalist Oz Pearlman headlined the event.
Public Figures React to the Controversy
Unlike previous instances where Trump called for Kimmel’s firing, the backlash this time has been relatively subdued. Disney/ABC has not commented, and public figures like Senator Ted Cruz and comedian Adam Carolla have defended Kimmel.
Kimmel himself has addressed Trump’s demands on his show. During Tuesday’s episode, he said:
"Only Donald Trump would demand I be fired for making a joke about his old age and then, a day later, go out and make a joke about his own old age."
The late-night host has continued to mock Trump’s calls for his dismissal throughout the week.
