캘리포니아주 로넛파크에서 근무하던 전직 경찰관 조셉 허파커(Joseph Huffaker)와 브렌단 테이트엄(Brendan Tatum)이 오는 5월 형량 선고를 받게 됐다. 로넛파크 법원이 허파커의 재심 요청을 기각했기 때문이다.
이들은 운전자들을 정지시킨 후 가짜 연방수사관으로 행세하며 현금과 마약을 빼앗은 혐의로 기소됐다. 훔친 마약은later 판매까지 했다.
테이트엄은 유죄를 인정하고 허파커를 고발하는 대가로 형량을 감형받았다. 반면 허파커는 무죄를 주장했으나 배심원단은 90분 만에 유죄 평결을 내렸다.
이 사건은 ‘브릭뱃(Brickbat)’이라는 제목으로 Reason.com에 게재됐다.
