General Motors (GM) has indefinitely postponed plans to introduce updated and lower-cost variants of its electric full-size trucks and SUVs later this decade. The decision follows a strategic review of the current electric vehicle (EV) market, leaving the future of key models in question.

The affected models include the Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, Hummer EV, and the Cadillac Escalade IQ, all of which were expected to receive updates around 2028. Sources cited by Automotive News confirmed that GM has shelved these plans indefinitely.

A GM spokesperson told Automotive News that the company has “not disclosed any potential plans or timing for any next-generation battery electric trucks” and declined to “engage in speculation.”

Production of Current Models Continues

Despite the delay, production of the existing electric trucks and SUVs will continue for the foreseeable future. Unlike the Ford F-150 Lightning, which has faced production challenges, both the Silverado EV and Sierra EV remain in production, though their underlying platforms are described as being “on life support.”

Sales Performance in Q1 2024

Sales figures for the first quarter of 2024 highlight the mixed reception of GM’s electric lineup:

  • Chevrolet Silverado EV: Nearly 1,400 units sold
  • GMC Sierra EV: Approximately 1,300 units sold
  • Hummer EV: Over 1,600 units sold
  • Cadillac Escalade IQ: About 2,000 units sold

While the Escalade IQ led in sales among these models, other Cadillac EVs such as the Lyriq, Optiq, and Vistiq are reportedly drawing more buyers to Cadillac showrooms. Meanwhile, the Chevrolet Equinox EV has performed strongly, with nearly 10,000 units sold in Q1 2024.
