Google is marking the 20th anniversary of its Translate app by introducing a new pronunciation practice feature, one of the most requested additions by users. The feature is currently available only on Android for English, Spanish, and Hindi in the United States and India.

If the feature is enabled for your account, you’ll see a “Practice” button at the bottom of the app. This button offers two options: “pronounce” or “listen”. Selecting “pronounce” allows the app to listen to your speech and use artificial intelligence to analyze your pronunciation in real time, providing instant feedback. It then displays a phonetic spelling of the correct pronunciation for comparison.

For example, Google demonstrated how the app corrects the pronunciation of the Spanish word for “juice”“jugo”. If a user pronounces it with an English “j” sound, the app suggests the correct phonetic spelling as “HU-go” to reflect the Spanish pronunciation.

According to Google, nearly one-third of mobile users rely on Translate to practice speaking and listening skills for real-world conversations. This new feature aims to enhance that experience by offering immediate, actionable feedback.

The company also shared key statistics about the app’s global usage:

  • Translate now supports over 250 languages, including some endangered and indigenous languages.
  • The app has over 1 billion monthly users.
  • These users translate more than 1 trillion words every month.
