Helldivers 2, one of the most popular cooperative shooters in recent years, has seen its Steam reviews dip into 'mostly negative' territory for the first time in over two years. The game’s chaotic, addictive gameplay loop has maintained a strong player base since launch, but recurring frustrations over unaddressed issues, controversial updates, and perceived developer missteps have culminated in a fresh wave of player backlash.
The latest surge in dissatisfaction follows a series of events that have deeply frustrated the community. While no single patch triggered the sudden decline in reviews, the April 28 update introducing the Warbond: Exo Experts—a premium battle pass featuring paywalled mechs—drew significant criticism. Players argued that another monetization-focused addition arrived while core issues and long-requested features remained unresolved.
Tensions escalated further after Johann Pilestedt, former CEO of Arrowhead Game Studios and current Chief Creative Officer, hosted an Ask Me Anything (AMA) where his responses about highly anticipated features sparked widespread outrage. Among the features dismissed or downplayed were ship modules, a proper endgame, weapon customization, transmog, and perks. Pilestedt’s replies suggested these were either not planned, not discussed, or not ready for public consideration, fueling perceptions of developer indifference.
One player on Reddit summarized the community’s reaction:
"Pilestedt's well-intentioned AMA was probably the worst thing Arrowhead could have possibly done. It was PR suicide to so casually say that things almost the entire community has been asking for for the last two years either aren't being considered at all, have been abandoned outright, aren't a priority, or to suggest they are pointless because only 'hardcore' players care about them."
The frustration was compounded by recent balance patches that some users claimed favored paying players. Notably, the durable damage update significantly increased enemy damage to mechs and armor, while the Hive Guard patch, released just one day before the AMA, buffed the High Guard enemy, making it substantially tankier despite ongoing issues with combat mechanics like mantling, climbing, and certain weapons.
On Steam, one user lamented:
"You had lightning in a bottle and decided to pry the lid off yourself."
The community’s response has included a review-bombing campaign, with players flooding the game’s Steam page with negative feedback. This marks another chapter in a recurring cycle of frustration for Helldivers 2, as players express exhaustion over what they perceive as a pattern of unmet promises and misaligned priorities from the developers.
