Homelander’s god complex has evolved from a personal delusion to a full-blown divine mission. Now the figurehead of a new church, his ambition remains unfulfilled. After a vision of Madelyn Stillwell in the previous episode, the halfway point of “The Boys” final season fixates on Homelander’s (Antony Starr) belief that he is the legitimate second coming of God.

Showrunner Eric Kripke Explains Homelander’s Divine Drive

Showrunner Eric Kripke spoke to TheWrap about the psychological forces fueling Homelander’s messianic push. He cited two core motivations:

  • Disgust with his humanity: “Homelander is truly disgusted by his own biological humanity,” Kripke said. “He hates the part of himself that’s human, but he’s inescapably human, and that’s what’s really the biggest engine that’s driving him mad.”
  • Demand for absolute devotion: “He doesn’t just demand loyalty. He demands it like in their brains and hearts. It’s not enough that you do what Homelander says, you actually have to love him. And for the guy who keeps saying from the beginning, ‘I don’t need love, love is weak, love is human,’ he ends up with the goal of ‘every human on Earth has to love me unconditionally, and that will finally be the thing that makes me happy, and if they don’t do it, they’re dead.’”

Homelander’s Church and the Cracks in His Godhood

By the episode’s end, Homelander is installed as the leader of the Democratic Church of America. The closing shot shows him “drinking in the love” of his adoring congregation, yet the first fissures in his divine claim are already visible.

Firecracker (Valerie Curry) reacts with visible discomfort during pitch meetings about Homelander’s godhood. She attempts to soften his claim, reducing it to something less than divine. Kripke warns this pushback will escalate:

“She’s searching for the off ramp, because saying you’re God is gonna be a rough one. But, like a prophet? Maybe? You’ll see that’s not good enough for him. Nothing’s good enough for him. I think this might be the bridge too far for him, because I think people, by and large, are reasonable people.”

Timely Parallels: Homelander’s Ambition and a Viral Trump Image

“The Boys” has long reflected contemporary culture, but Homelander’s divine campaign aligns eerily with a recent viral moment. Last week, former President Trump posted an image on Truth Social depicting himself as Jesus, healing the sick with light from his hands. Trump later removed the image, claiming he was dressed as a Red Cross worker.
