Jeep made automotive history in 1984 with its first all-new product debut since the 1960s: the compact XJ Cherokee. Designed for efficiency and innovative packaging, the unibody Cherokee broke from traditional SUV construction methods. Alongside the Cherokee, Jeep introduced the all-new XJ Wagoneer, signaling the end of the road for the long-serving SJ Wagoneer.
The original SJ Wagoneer, introduced in 1963, had remained largely unchanged for over two decades. By the 1980s, competitors had already undergone multiple redesigns, leaving the SJ platform outdated. Jeep addressed this with the XJ Wagoneer in 1984, planning to phase out the SJ Wagoneer shortly after.
The XJ Wagoneer: A Luxury SUV with Premium Features
The XJ Wagoneer, particularly in its Limited trim, featured the same exterior wood trim as the full-size Wagoneer, along with an array of standard features. Trim levels mirrored the SJ model, offering a base Wagoneer or the fully-loaded Wagoneer Limited. Jeep’s decision to name the XJ’s top trim "Limited" foreshadowed its future luxury strategy. Meanwhile, the SJ Wagoneer’s Brougham trim was discontinued, and the remaining SJ model was rebranded as the Grand Wagoneer—a name change only, as Jeep intended to retire the SJ platform entirely.
Contrary to some beliefs, the Grand Wagoneer was not an upgraded version of the SJ Wagoneer. It was simply a name change, as the SJ platform was nearing the end of its lifecycle. The XJ Wagoneer stood apart from the Cherokee with distinctive design elements, including:
- Exterior wood trim (absent on the base Wagoneer)
- Upgraded alloy wheels, often with whitewall tires
- A grille featuring fine vertical slats
- Chrome-finished mirrors, door handles, wheels, and bumpers (not available on Cherokee models)
- A smaller Jeep logo on the front, emphasizing the Wagoneer’s premium positioning
Luxury Inside: The Wagoneer Limited Interior
The Wagoneer Limited’s interior was a key selling point, offering features far beyond the Cherokee’s. Standard amenities included:
- Cloth-leather seats with vertical ribbed detailing, bolstering, and premium stitching
- Power-adjustable seats with "Limited" embroidery on both front and rear
- Thickly padded door panels with Wagoneer emblems and wood trim
- Wood trim on dashboard, door sections, and switchgear
- Standard equipment such as air conditioning, rear wiper, tilt steering wheel, and four-wheel power disc brakes
The base Wagoneer lacked exterior and interior wood trim, making the Limited trim the clear choice for buyers seeking luxury. The XJ Wagoneer’s blend of innovation, premium features, and upscale design cemented its legacy as a trailblazer in the SUV segment.
