Meta’s latest initiative to monitor employee computer use is fueling internal backlash, with workers openly criticizing the program as an invasion of privacy and a step toward unchecked data exploitation.
An engineer’s internal post, viewed by nearly 20,000 colleagues, captured the growing dissent.
“Selfishly, I don’t want my screen scraped because it feels like an invasion of my privacy. But zooming out, I don’t want to live in a world where humans — employees or otherwise — are exploited for their training data.”
The initiative, called the Model Capability Initiative (MCI), tracks keyboard strokes, mouse movements, and screen recordings while employees use certain applications. Meta leadership asserts the data will help train AI models to understand how people perform everyday tasks on computers, aligning with the industry’s push toward AI agents capable of autonomous task completion.
Despite assurances from Meta’s chief technology officer, Andrew Bosworth, that the data would be “tightly controlled,” many employees view the program as a blatant privacy violation. This skepticism is compounded by Meta’s history of mishandling user data, including the Cambridge Analytica scandal.
The backlash coincides with broader turmoil at Meta. The company recently announced plans to lay off 10% of its workforce—approximately 8,000 employees—amid its aggressive AI expansion. Employees are also under pressure to increase productivity using AI tools and coding assistants, with AI usage now a factor in performance reviews.
Internal Defiance Grows as Petitions Circulate
Workers have escalated their opposition, with a petition circulating since last week demanding the end of the MCI program. The petition argues that
“it should not be the norm that companies of any size are permitted to exploit their employees by nonconsensually extracting their data for the purposes of AI training.”
Employees have posted flyers in communal areas, including cafeterias and bathrooms, to rally support for the petition. The engineer behind the internal post described the sentiment as a culmination of years of layoffs, budget cuts, and heightened workloads.
“Layoffs, budget cuts, years of efficiency and intensity — all of it contributed to a growing sense of dread. MCI is a microcosm for the AI movement. Yes, it’s just a small turn of the temperature knob, but it’s representative of the types of systems that people will be compelled to build.”
The criticisms, while fervent, carry a layer of irony. Meta has long faced scrutiny over its privacy practices, with the Cambridge Analytica scandal serving as a stark reminder of its past missteps. Now, employees are challenging the company’s internal surveillance practices, signaling a potential shift in workplace dynamics as AI integration accelerates.
