Jets pass on Mazi Smith’s fifth-year option

The New York Jets have officially declined to exercise the fifth-year option on defensive tackle Mazi Smith’s contract, according to reports from ESPN’s Rich Cimini. The decision means Smith will enter unrestricted free agency in March 2027.

Will McDonald IV’s option exercised

In contrast, the Jets announced on Wednesday that they have exercised the fifth-year option on edge rusher Will McDonald IV’s contract. The move guarantees McDonald a salary of $14.124 million for the 2027 season.

Smith’s career trajectory with the Jets

Selected by the Dallas Cowboys with the 26th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Smith was traded to the Jets last year as part of the Quinnen Williams deal. His tenure with the Jets has been underwhelming, with Smith appearing in just three games and recording minimal impact. Over 39 games with the Cowboys, he tallied 57 tackles and two sacks.

Future outlook for Smith

Despite the Jets’ decision, Smith retains an opportunity to secure a future with the team. A strong performance in the 2026 season could position him for a new contract or roster spot. If not, he will enter the free agency market next March as an unrestricted free agent.

"Passing on the option was expected given Smith's underwhelming production in the league."
