SAIC has launched its new Z7 electric sedan, a budget-friendly rival to Porsche’s Taycan, with a starting price of just 219,800 yuan ($32,200). This aggressive pricing positions the Z7 below mid-range sedans like the Toyota Camry in the U.S. market, while the Taycan’s base model starts at 918,000 yuan ($134,500)—a gap of over $100,000.

The Z7 was unveiled earlier this year as a competitor to the Xiaomi SU7 and is now making its public debut at the Beijing Auto Show. SAIC has confirmed multiple variants, including a wagon version branded as the Z7T, which mirrors Porsche’s Cross Turismo design.

Performance and Specifications

The entry-level Z7 Max features a rear-mounted electric motor with 359 hp and an 81 kWh battery pack, delivering a claimed range of 732 km (455 miles). For higher performance, SAIC offers the Z7 Ultra with a dual-motor setup rated at 590 hp and a 100 kWh battery, enabling a 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint in 3.44 seconds.

The Z7 Max+ variant includes the larger battery, extending range to 905 km (562 miles) for 249,800 yuan ($36,600). The top-tier Z7 Ultra combines the dual-motor setup with the 100 kWh pack, offering 791 km (491 miles) of range at 299,800 yuan ($43,900).

Comparison with Porsche Taycan

Porsche’s base Taycan starts at 918,000 yuan ($134,500), with 402 hp and a 0-100 km/h time of 4.8 seconds. The Taycan 4 costs 1,038,000 yuan ($152,100), delivers 510 hp, and achieves 0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds. The Taycan GTS offers 690 hp and a 0-100 km/h time of 3.3 seconds for 1,298,000 yuan ($190,000), while the Taycan Turbo boasts 872 hp and a 2.7-second 0-100 km/h sprint at 1,568,000 yuan ($230,000).

Wagon Variant: Z7T

SAIC also offers the Z7T wagon, available in three trims: Z7T Max, Z7T Max+, and Z7T Ultra. The base Z7T Max starts at 229,800 yuan ($33,700) with an 81 kWh battery and 712 km (442 miles) of range. The Z7T Max+ adds the 100 kWh battery, extending range to 873 km (542 miles).

"There is a reason why Jim Farley has been warning about the pressure coming from China."

With its competitive pricing and performance, the Z7 and Z7T variants challenge Porsche’s dominance in the premium electric sedan segment, reinforcing China’s role as a hub for affordable, high-quality EVs.
