The Trump administration has taken legal action against The New York Times, accusing the newspaper of discriminating against a white male employee in hiring and promotion practices.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) filed the lawsuit in federal court on Tuesday, representing the employee who alleged his race and sex were factors in being denied a promotion. The lawsuit claims this violated the Civil Rights Act.

A spokesperson for The New York Times, Danielle Rhoades Ha, dismissed the allegations as politically motivated.

"The New York Times categorically rejects the meritless and politically motivated allegations that the Trump administration’s E.E.O.C. is pursuing against us. Our employment practices are merit-based and focused on recruiting and promoting the best talent in the world."

According to The Times, the white employee filed his complaint with the EEOC in July 2025 at the New York office. The complaint was later transferred to an investigator in Alabama. Since then, the EEOC has been investigating the newspaper, with both parties exchanging information.

The two sides briefly participated in a voluntary mediation process known as conciliation, which typically follows an EEOC finding of "reasonable cause" for discrimination. If conciliation fails, the EEOC may proceed with a lawsuit.

The case initially examined The Times’ hiring and promotion practices but later focused on whether the white employee was denied a deputy editor position. On April 21, the EEOC informed The Times that the case had been referred to its legal unit.

Trump Administration’s Broader Crackdown on Media and DEI Policies

This lawsuit is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to target media outlets critical of the president. It also reflects the administration’s scrutiny of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practices in corporate America.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is currently investigating Comcast, the parent company of NBC, over alleged DEI violations. Additionally, FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr announced an investigation into DEI practices at Disney, the parent company of ABC, last month.

Longstanding Tensions Between Trump and The New York Times

President Trump has a long history of conflict with The New York Times. In 2024, he filed a $15 billion defamation lawsuit against the newspaper. For over a decade, Trump has repeatedly referred to the publication as "the failing New York Times."

This latest legal action marks another escalation in the Trump administration’s use of federal agencies to challenge media organizations and corporate policies it opposes.
