1802年5月3日、米国の首都ワシントンD.C.が正式に法人化され、連邦議会の専管統治下に置かれました。
この出来事は、憲法第1条第8節に規定された「合衆国政府の所在地となる地区（10マイル四方を超えない範囲）」に関する条項に基づくものです。具体的には、特定の州からの割譲と連邦議会の承認を経て、首都機能が確立されました。
当時の米国は、独立後まもない時期であり、首都機能の恒久的な所在地を定めることで、国家としての基盤を強化する狙いがありました。ワシントンD.C.の法人化は、その後の米国政治の中心地としての役割を確固たるものとする重要な転換点となりました。
