BMW’s China-Only EVs Prioritize Safety with Redesigned Door Handles

BMW has launched its China-only i3 Long Wheelbase and iX3 Long Wheelbase electric vehicles (EVs), but the headline feature isn’t rear legroom, horsepower, or battery capacity—it’s the door handles. While European and U.S. models of the Neue Klasse lineup feature flush pop-out handles, China’s versions adopt semi-recessed, more conventional units.

This change follows growing scrutiny of retractable handles after several high-profile crashes in China, where trapped occupants reportedly struggled to exit damaged vehicles. Tesla has faced similar concerns in the U.S. and abroad, with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opening an investigation into Model Y door handles in 2023 after reports of parents unable to reach children trapped inside during power loss.

"Suddenly, boring handles look pretty smart."

BMW states that the redesigned hardware meets Chinese regulations while adhering to its own global safety standards. The company also acknowledges the practicality of the new handles, noting that pop-out handles can be fiddly in use.

Neue Klasse Era Begins in China with Localized Upgrades

The i3 Long Wheelbase and iX3 Long Wheelbase mark the official start of BMW’s Neue Klasse era in China, tailored specifically for local buyers. Both models ride on BMW’s latest dedicated EV architecture but feature extended wheelbases to provide additional rear legroom—a critical feature in China’s market.

While BMW has not yet revealed the exact wheelbase extension for the i3 Long Wheelbase compared to the Western i3 sedan’s 2,898 mm (114.1 inches), the iX3 Long Wheelbase receives an extra 108 mm (4.25 inches), bringing its wheelbase to 3,005 mm (118.3 inches)—comparable to the BMW X5. The additional sheetmetal has been carefully integrated to maintain the vehicles’ proportions.

China-Specific OS and AI Integration

Inside, both models feature BMW Panoramic iDrive and a China-specific version of Operating System X. Key features include:

  • Navigation developed with Amap.
  • AI assistance via Alibaba and DeepSeek.
  • HarmonyOS NEXT compatibility for seamless integration into China’s digital ecosystem.
  • Locally developed driver assistance systems in collaboration with Momenta, tuned for Chinese roads, traffic patterns, and parking challenges.
  • Level 2 navigation-guided support across city streets, highways, and parking scenarios.

Range and Charging: Optimistic Figures and Real-World Performance

BMW claims impressive range figures for the China-only models: over 900 km (559 miles) for the iX3 Long Wheelbase and more than 1,000 km (621 miles) for the i3 Long Wheelbase under the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC). However, real-world range is likely to be significantly lower.

For comparison, BMW’s North American models quote 400 miles (644 km) EPA for the shorter iX3 and 440 miles (709 km) for the truncated i3 sedan. Both Chinese models are equipped with 800-volt electrical systems and support up to 400 kW DC fast charging, matching Western specifications but trailing behind competitors like BYD in charging speed.

Safety and Regulatory Compliance

BMW emphasizes that the redesigned door handles meet both Chinese regulations and the company’s global safety standards. The shift to semi-recessed handles addresses concerns raised by recent incidents, prioritizing occupant safety and ease of exit in emergency situations.
