Ford is phasing out the 6.8L gas V8 engine in its Super Duty trucks, replacing it with the 7.3L "Godzilla" V8 as the standard gas engine starting in the 2027 model year. The move was confirmed by a Ford spokesperson, who stated,

“To better align with the needs of our customers, we are making the Ford 7.3L V8—our most powerful and popular gas engine—the standard gas engine across our Super Duty lineup.”

The 6.8L engine, a destroked version of the 7.3L V8, was introduced in 2023 but has been discontinued after just four model years. The 7.3L V8 offers a significant power boost over the 6.8L, increasing output from 405 horsepower and 445 lb-ft of torque to 430 horsepower and 485 lb-ft of torque for just a $1,000 upcharge.

Ford is also eliminating the standard-output 6.7L Power Stroke diesel engine, which produced 475 horsepower and 1,050 lb-ft of torque. The high-output version, now the sole diesel option, delivers 500 horsepower and 1,200 lb-ft of torque. A Ford spokesperson explained,

“By making our best-in-class 6.7L high-output Power Stroke diesel engine standard for 2027, we are prioritizing our most advanced diesel technology and ensuring that Super Duty remains the leader in heavy-duty capability.”

This shift aligns with a broader industry trend. Ram, for example, made a similar change for the 2025 model year by replacing its base engine with a more powerful Cummins option.

The decision to standardize more powerful engines reflects customer preferences and may also increase revenue, as the high-output Power Stroke was previously a $2,500 option over the standard-output unit.
