Honda has indefinitely shelved plans to build a massive electric vehicle (EV) and battery plant in Alliston, Ontario, after previously delaying the project by two years. The decision marks another setback for the automaker’s electric ambitions in North America, following the cancellation of three upcoming EV models.
Project Details and Timeline
The proposed plant, first announced in 2024, was set to receive $15 billion CAD ($11 billion USD) in investment. Construction was initially scheduled to begin soon, but Honda has now put the project on hold indefinitely while it reassesses market conditions. The company had already delayed the project in May 2025, pushing back the timeline by two years despite securing land and financial support from the Canadian government.
Honda will continue to produce the Civic and CR-V at its existing Alliston plant, which opened in 1986, but the future of the EV facility remains uncertain.
Why the Shift Away from EVs?
Several factors have contributed to Honda’s decision to pause its EV plans:
- Weak EV Demand in the US: Consumer interest in fully electric vehicles has not met Honda’s expectations, prompting a strategic pivot.
- Policy Changes: The removal of federal EV incentives in the US has increased the cost of electric vehicles, reducing their appeal to buyers.
- Relaxed Efficiency Rules: Updated regulations have lessened the urgency for automakers to prioritize EV production.
- Trade Uncertainty: Ongoing tariffs and trade tensions between the US and Canada have added risk to long-term investments in the region.
“American tariffs and changes to US domestic policies are creating real pressures for automakers, prompting some to delay or scale back investments in electric vehicle and battery projects.”

Honda’s Hybrid Focus and EV Scrapped Models
Honda is shifting its North American strategy to prioritize hybrids, which are currently experiencing strong sales. The company has already taken steps to align its product lineup with this shift:
- Scrapped the Prologue EV, a model co-developed with GM.
- Cancelled three upcoming electric vehicles and SUVs for North America, including models under the Honda and Acura brands, despite them being in the final stages of development.
- Abandoned plans to launch EVs under the Afeela brand, a joint venture with Sony.
Instead of focusing solely on EVs, Honda will extend the life of existing models and invest in hybrid technology to meet consumer demand and reduce costs.
Future Plans and Flexibility
While Honda is pausing its Canadian EV plant, the company is not abandoning electric vehicles entirely. It retains flexible production lines in Ohio, capable of manufacturing gas, hybrid, or electric models based on market demand. Honda has invested $1 billion to upgrade these facilities, ensuring adaptability in a rapidly changing automotive landscape.
