Hyundai Expands Fake Gearshifts and Engine Sounds Beyond N Models
Hyundai is expanding its signature fake gearshifts and engine sounds beyond its performance N models to broader electric vehicle (EV) lineups. The technology, which enhances the driving experience by mimicking the feel of a combustion engine, is already being tested in non-N models such as the Ioniq 9 SUV.
However, lower-output EVs will not receive the feature, as Hyundai requires a minimum level of power to deliver the clutch-type sensation. The automaker emphasizes that the illusion depends heavily on available power output.
How Hyundai’s Fake Gearshifts Enhance the Driving Experience
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N introduced drivers to an engaging, playful experience reminiscent of combustion cars, thanks to its fake gearshifts and engine noise. Following its success, Hyundai expanded the technology to the Hyundai Ioniq 6 N and Ioniq 9. The brand now plans to integrate these features into more mainstream Hyundai EVs in the future.
“We really want to have a proper [driving] experience – not just the sound, but a bit of the boost.”
— Raf van Nuffel, Hyundai Europe Product Vice President, speaking to Carsales
Hyundai’s approach goes beyond simple audio enhancements. The system also manages power delivery to simulate the engagement and release of a clutch when drivers call for a ‘gear shift.’ Drivers can choose to disable the feature if they prefer a more traditional EV experience.
Why Hyundai Won’t Offer the Feature on Base Models
While Hyundai is expanding the technology beyond N models, it will not be available on base EV variants. The company cites power requirements as the primary reason. Raf van Nuffel explained:
“It is not something that we limit to N, but we have certain requirements – we do need a minimum level of power to have this clutch-type feeling. We are not going to offer it across the range, but definitely [there is] more to come without always having to go for 600 horsepower.”
The feature is designed to stand out in a crowded market of otherwise silent EVs, offering enthusiasts a more dynamic driving experience without requiring the highest performance trims.
Hyundai’s Approach to Fake Engine Sounds: A Balanced Solution
Fake engine sounds have been a polarizing topic in the automotive industry. Despite the debate, many automakers—including Hyundai—have adopted the technology to enhance the driving experience. Hyundai’s implementation stands out by combining audio enhancements with power management to create a more immersive feel.
Owners can choose whether to use the feature, making it a flexible addition rather than an imposed experience. This approach aligns with Hyundai’s broader strategy to blend the best of combustion and electric driving dynamics.
The expansion of fake gearshifts and engine sounds to non-N models reflects Hyundai’s commitment to innovation and customer choice in the EV market.
