What could be the most ambitious Land Rover engine swap ever attempted is now up for sale. Diesel Pump UK, a specialist in high-performance diesel swaps, has transformed a 1988 Land Rover Defender 110 200 TDi by installing a JCB backhoe engine, preserving the Defender’s rugged British character while significantly boosting reliability.

The five-year project is complete, and Diesel Pump UK is now offering the Defender for sale—with international shipping available. If you’re expecting a tax refund, this might be the perfect investment.

Why a JCB Backhoe Engine?

Diesel Pump UK typically focuses on Mercedes-Benz OM606 swaps, a 3.0-liter inline-six often called the "2JZ of diesels." However, for this Defender build, the team chose a different path: a JCB backhoe engine. JCB, a British manufacturer of agricultural and industrial equipment, shares Land Rover’s quintessentially British roots.

Luke Dale, owner of Diesel Pump UK, explained in a YouTube video released at the project’s completion that the goal wasn’t raw horsepower. Instead, the focus was on reliability and maintaining the Defender’s British identity.

Engine Specs: Power and Performance

The original 2.5-liter turbodiesel inline-four was replaced with a JCB TCAE-108, a 4.4-liter inline-four sourced from new old stock. This engine delivers:

  • 145 horsepower at 2,200 rpm
  • 413 pound-feet of torque at 1,500 rpm

Compared to the stock engine’s 108 hp and 188 lb-ft, the JCB swap offers a substantial increase in both power and torque, making the Defender more capable for real-world use.

Engine Bay Modifications for the JCB Swap

Fitting the larger JCB engine into the Defender’s engine bay required extensive modifications:

  • Sheetmetal trimming to accommodate the wider engine.
  • Relocation of bump stops to clear the taller engine.
  • Installation of a custom billet oil sump to lower the engine and clear the hood.
  • Custom-fabricated hood with additional clearance.

The JCB engine is paired with a stouter-than-stock R380 5-speed manual transmission and a heavy-duty clutch. Additional upgrades include:

  • A custom charge-air cooler.
  • Stainless steel exhaust system.
  • Rebuilt axles.
  • A two-inch suspension lift.
  • New sheetmetal to replace rusted-out sections.

The result is a Defender that retains its vintage charm but is far more reliable and capable for daily use or even business purposes—potentially offering tax write-offs.
