Mazda has officially confirmed the return of its smallest SUV, the CX-3, with a second-generation model set to enter production in Thailand in 2027. The compact crossover will feature mild-hybrid powertrains and design elements inspired by the Vision-X Compact concept.

The announcement was made in Mazda’s latest financial presentation, where the automaker stated it will "introduce the next-generation CX-3" in 2026 to strengthen its position in the high-volume compact SUV segment. Additional details revealed that production will take place at the AutoAlliance Thailand plant, with plans described as "progressing smoothly."

The Current CX-3’s Legacy

The first-generation CX-3, introduced in 2014, was discontinued in the U.S. and Europe in the early 2020s, overshadowed by the larger CX-30. However, the model remained in demand in markets such as Australia, Southeast Asia, and Mexico, prompting Mazda to justify a full redesign.

Powertrain and Technology

Mazda has not yet disclosed specific hardware details for the new CX-3. However, the company has emphasized a "multi-solution strategy" that blends electrification, hybrid technology, and combustion engines based on regional demand. This suggests the new model will likely feature at least mild-hybrid options, with potential full-hybrid variants, but no fully electric powertrain.

Design Teasers and Inspiration

Mazda has provided early design clues for the next-generation CX-3. Sketches from the company’s Thailand investment announcement in February 2025 previewed a compact crossover with smoother surfacing than the current CX-3, rounded taillights, and styling cues inspired by the latest CX-5.

The Vision-X Compact concept, unveiled later in 2025 in Japan, offered additional hints. While Mazda described the concept as a tiny city hatchback, its design themes are expected to influence the CX-3’s appearance. The Vision-X features a 99-inch (2,515 mm) wheelbase, slightly smaller than the current CX-3’s 101.2-inch (2,570 mm) wheelbase.

Market Focus and Future Availability

Mazda’s official documents indicate the new CX-3 is being developed to reinforce Thailand’s role as an export hub for Japan and ASEAN markets. Australia is also expected to remain a priority, given the current model’s continued strong sales despite its age.

However, the CX-3 is unlikely to return to U.S. roads, as Mazda has not indicated plans to reintroduce the model in the American market.
