Peugeot’s Beijing Auto Show Debuts Signal Shift Toward China-Centric Flagship EVs
Peugeot has taken a bold step toward reclaiming its position in the premium car segment with the unveiling of two groundbreaking electric vehicle concepts at the Beijing Auto Show. The Concept 6 and Concept 8 not only preview future flagship models but also underscore the brand’s strategic focus on the Chinese market.
These concepts, along with the Polygon hatch concept, were introduced to signal Peugeot’s renewed ambition in the high-stakes luxury and performance segments.
Concept 6: A Glimpse of the 508’s Successor
The Concept 6 serves as a preview of what could be the next-generation Peugeot 508, which ceased production in 2023. Described by Peugeot as a large sedan, the concept showcases a sleek fastback wagon design, blending sportiness with elegance. While the show car prioritizes design flair—evident in its sharply angled rear window—the roofline maintains a relatively high position until the C-pillar, aiming to preserve rear passenger comfort.
The rear of the Concept 6 features a split rear spoiler, an illuminated Peugeot crest, and six horizontally oriented LED lights, creating a striking visual impact. The front end draws inspiration from the Audi R8, with three horizontal LED lights on each side that reinterpret Peugeot’s signature illuminated claw marks.
Concept 8: Peugeot’s Aspirational Luxury Electric SUV
The Concept 8 represents a more ambitious vision: a potential flagship electric SUV positioned above the current Peugeot 5008. This aligns with statements from Peugeot CEO Alain Favey, who previously told Autocar that he was “thinking about” a new halo SUV for the brand.
The Concept 8 shares design elements with the Concept 6, including the split rear spoiler and horizontal light bar. Its clean surfaces, voluptuous rear fenders, and pinched waist further emphasize Peugeot’s evolving design language. These same cues are also present in the Polygon concept, which is widely believed to preview the next-generation Peugeot 208 hatchback.
Polygon Concept: Previewing the Next 208 Hatch
The Polygon concept, first introduced in 2023, made its China debut alongside the Concept 6 and Concept 8. While its primary role is to preview the future Peugeot 208, its design language reflects the brand’s broader styling direction for upcoming models.
Production Plans: China-Centric Flagships with Global Reach
Peugeot has confirmed that the production versions of the Concept 6 and Concept 8 are being developed primarily for the Chinese market. These models will be manufactured by Peugeot’s long-standing partner, Dongfeng Motor Corporation, at its plant in Wuhan.
Despite their China-focused development, Peugeot has stated that these flagship EVs will also be exported to Western markets, including Europe. This strategy aims to position Peugeot as a serious contender in the premium electric vehicle segment, competing with established luxury brands.
Peugeot’s Strategic Shift
The Beijing Auto Show served as a platform for Peugeot to reassert its presence in the luxury car conversation. By focusing on high-end, electric models like the Concept 6 and Concept 8, the brand is signaling its intent to move beyond its traditional strongholds and compete in the rapidly evolving EV market.
