Victor Sanchez’s 2025 Ram 1500 was held by a dealer for over a month after its airbags deployed unexpectedly while he was driving. The Canadian owner now faces repair estimates ranging from CA$15,000 to over CA$20,000 (approximately US$11,000 to US$15,000).
Stellantis, the automaker behind Ram, has declined warranty coverage for the repairs, citing data from the truck’s Occupant Restraint Control (ORC) module as evidence of an impending rollover.
Airbag Deployment Leaves Owner with Extensive Damage
Sanchez was driving home from work in the early morning when the incident occurred. Without warning, the truck’s curtain airbags and both seat-mounted airbags deployed simultaneously, disorienting him and nearly causing a crash.
“It felt like a huge explosion. My hazard lights went on, and I was disoriented. It was pretty scary to be honest.”
The sudden deployment damaged multiple components, including the headliner, seats, seatbelts, and control modules. Sanchez initially expected the repairs to be covered under warranty but faced delays and eventual denial.
Stellantis Cites Rollover Risk, Denies Warranty Claim
After weeks of waiting, Stellantis provided an explanation: its internal review concluded the truck’s systems detected conditions consistent with an impending rollover. The automaker retrieved and analyzed data from the ORC module, which it claims showed the vehicle was beginning to tip.
“Following a comprehensive review by Stellantis’ service, warranty, and engineering teams, data from the vehicle’s Occupant Restraint Control (ORC) module was successfully retrieved and analyzed. The analysis indicates the vehicle was beginning to tip, and multiple onboard systems predicted a rollover event.”
“Based on this data, the airbag deployment was commanded and operated as designed, and no manufacturing defect was identified. As a result, the condition does not meet the criteria for warranty coverage.”
Stellantis emphasized that its warranty does not cover damage linked to accidents, misuse, or external factors, leaving Sanchez responsible for the full repair costs. The owner is also paying for a rental vehicle during the prolonged repair process.
