Colin Angle Introduces 'Familiar,' an AI Companion Robot

Colin Angle, the co-founder of iRobot and inventor of the iconic Roomba automated vacuum, has unveiled a new robot designed to foster human connection. Unlike his previous creation, this one is not a cleaning device but a furry, lifelike companion called a 'Familiar.'

What Is a Familiar?

The Familiar is an AI-powered robot that uses an on-device generative AI model to interact with its owner. It develops a distinct personality and communicates through meowing, purring, and expressive body language—avoiding direct speech to prevent harmful advice. Angle describes it as a 'physically embodied AI system.'

Key Features of the Familiar:

  • AI-driven personality development
  • Communication via meows, purrs, and body language
  • Designed to learn from and adapt to its owner’s routines
  • Scheduled for release in 2025

Angle’s Vision for AI Companionship

"The next era of robotics is not just about dexterity or humanoid form — it’s about machines that can build and sustain human connection."

— Colin Angle, in an interview with The Verge

Angle emphasized that the goal is genuine companionship, not just functionality. He stated, "If this is a toy, we’ve failed. If this is a creature that you want in your world, then we’ve knocked it out of the park."

From iRobot to Familiar Machines Magic

Angle co-founded iRobot in 1990, the company behind the Roomba. In 2024, he stepped down as CEO after Amazon’s failed acquisition of iRobot. Following this, Angle co-founded Familiar Machines Magic, the company developing the Familiar.

The company deliberately avoids humanoid robots, a decision influenced by controversies surrounding AI companions. Reports have highlighted risks such as unhealthy emotional dependencies and even psychotic episodes linked to AI interactions. Angle acknowledges these concerns, noting that the Familiar’s design—avoiding direct speech—helps mitigate potential harm.

Controversy and Ethical Considerations

While AI-powered stuffed animals for children have been caught providing harmful advice, Angle’s approach focuses on companionship through lifelike behaviors rather than anthropomorphism. However, the challenge remains: Can a physically embodied AI maintain the illusion of companionship without crossing ethical boundaries?

Angle admits the high bar his company must clear: "There’s a high bar that needs to be cleared here while skirting numerous safety-related and ethical questions, plus the even greater question of whether a market for these things exists."

Release Timeline and Market Potential

Familiar Machines Magic plans to begin selling Familiars in 2025, the earliest possible date. The company’s success hinges on whether consumers embrace AI companions that prioritize emotional connection over utility.
