Collector Acquires Fourth Bug-Themed Bugatti, Completing Sur Mesure Project
A US collector has taken delivery of their fourth bug-inspired Bugatti, the W16 Mistral Fly Bug, marking the completion of a years-long Sur Mesure commission. The hypercar joins a collection that already includes the Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse Hellbug, Chiron Hellbee, and Divo Lady Bug.
The Mistral Fly Bug draws inspiration from the dragonfly, with a sculpted bodywork featuring a bespoke Dragonfly Blue livery. The color shifts between turquoise and deep blue, mimicking the iridescent quality of the insect.
Design Features and Customization
The hypercar incorporates a unique ellipse pattern that becomes denser toward the rear, similar to the Divo Lady Bug. Designers integrated the Bugatti Macaron emblem into the pattern, a task described as one of the project’s most demanding technical challenges.
The ellipse pattern extends to the door cards, where leather and Alcantara create a 3D effect. The exposed two-seater cabin follows a blue and black theme, matching the exterior. Additional animal-inspired details include the gear selector, which features Rembrandt, Bugatti’s famous Dancing Elephant.
Technical Specifications
The Mistral Fly Bug retains the mechanical underpinnings of the standard Mistral, which is based on the Chiron chassis. It is powered by the same quad-turbocharged 8.0-liter W16 engine, producing 1,579 hp (1,177 kW / 1,600 PS) and 1,600 Nm (1,180 lb-ft) of torque.
Cost and Collection Value
Bugatti has not disclosed the price of the Mistral Fly Bug, but given the collector’s four-car bug-themed collection, the total investment is estimated to exceed $30 million. A base Mistral starts at around €5 million (approximately $5.9 million before taxes), with customization costs pushing the total significantly higher.
According to Bugatti, the Mistral Fly Bug represents the final chapter in the collector’s multi-generational journey through the world of bugs, ruling out future ant-inspired models like the Tourbillon.
Sur Mesure Program: Where Imagination Meets Engineering
The Sur Mesure program caters to customers who view eight-figure sums as a starting point for collaboration. Bugatti’s design teams in Molsheim and Berlin work closely with clients to turn bespoke visions into reality, with no limits beyond imagination.
