When Asha Sharma took over as Xbox’s chief executive, replacing Phil Spencer, some feared she might steer the brand in the wrong direction. Instead, her leadership is proving to be a win for consumers, particularly with Game Pass. The service’s pricing has been adjusted, and Sharma is now laying out a clear vision to keep it both affordable and sustainable.

Game Pass Pricing: A Shift Toward Affordability

In an interview with Game File, Sharma emphasized that Xbox is committed to reducing Game Pass prices further and adopting a more flexible pricing model. Affordability is now a cornerstone of the company’s strategy, extending beyond Game Pass to include hardware and software decisions.

"I want to continue to make sure, as we build hardware, software, services, we’re spending just as much time on performance and playtime as we are on making sure that we can innovate to offer more affordable devices and hardware and services," Sharma said.

Addressing Past Price Increases

Sharma acknowledged that Game Pass pricing had become less flexible over time, with the monthly cost reaching $29.99 last year—a hike that mirrored broader trends in the subscription industry. "Historically," she noted, "our pricing hasn't been as flexible." The recent adjustments were a direct response to these concerns.

"You saw that with Game Pass. It had become too expensive. So we took a step to address that," Sharma added.

A Two-Step Strategy for Game Pass’s Future

Sharma described a "two-step process" to ensure Game Pass remains both affordable and viable long-term. The first step was lowering prices, which has already been implemented. The second step involves re-evaluating the service’s value in a rapidly evolving market, particularly as new generations of players come online.

"One is just, let's make sure it's affordable, which we addressed. The second is, what does value look like eight years later after the advent of Game Pass and the world changing around us and the next generation coming online? And so we're exploring a number of different things," Sharma explained.

She also stressed a global perspective, stating, "I want to make sure that people around the world are able to play."

No Guarantees on Future Pricing

While Sharma’s goals are clear, she cautioned against expecting specific future price targets, citing the unpredictability of market realities. "A reality to the market we're in also has a tendency to affect businesses in unpredictable ways," she said.

Customizable Game Pass Tiers on the Horizon?

Recent reports suggest Xbox may soon introduce customizable Game Pass tiers, allowing users to tailor their subscriptions by selecting only the features they want. This approach could align with Sharma’s broader vision for flexibility and affordability, though no official details have been confirmed.

For now, Sharma’s focus remains on balancing player needs with business sustainability—a challenge that will shape the future of Game Pass.
