The FIA and Formula E have officially unveiled the Gen4 race car, a groundbreaking electric vehicle set to debut in the 2026/2027 season. This next-generation racer introduces a new powertrain with performance levels that redefine electric motorsport.

Record-Breaking Performance Metrics

The Gen4 car delivers a massive power upgrade, producing up to 805 hp (600 kW / 816 PS) in Attack Mode—nearly doubling the previous limit of 469 hp (350 kW / 476 PS). Even in standard race mode, the Gen4 generates 603 hp (450 kW / 612 PS), a 50% increase over its predecessor and comparable to the Kia EV6 GT.

Acceleration is equally impressive, with the Gen4 achieving:

  • 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 1.8 seconds
  • 0-124 mph (0-200 km/h) in 4.4 seconds—1.5 seconds faster than the Gen3 Evo
  • Top speed of 208 mph (335 km/h)

Formula E claims these improvements will result in the fastest-ever lap times in the series, with street circuits expected to see lap times drop by at least five seconds per lap compared to Gen3 Evo cars.

Sustainability and Innovation at the Core

The Gen4 car is not just about speed—it’s also a pioneer in sustainability. Formula E describes it as the world’s first 100% recyclable race car, incorporating:

  • At least 20% recycled materials in its construction
  • Batteries without rare earth minerals
  • 600 kW fast-charging capability

These features underscore Formula E’s commitment to reducing environmental impact while maintaining high performance.

Industry Leaders Praise the Gen4 Breakthrough

Jeff Dodds, Formula E CEO, shared his enthusiasm for the new car:

“Gen4 isn’t just a car, it’s a bold declaration of our ambition. Seeing what it can do on track for the first time is a real milestone for Formula E—we are now delivering performance levels that were thought impossible for electric vehicles just five years ago.”

He added, “This is just the beginning, as its refinement is now in the hands of our manufacturers—Porsche, Jaguar, Stellantis, Nissan, Lola Cars, and Mahindra—to push development to even higher limits of performance ahead of its racing debut later this year.”

What’s Next for Gen4?

The Gen4 car was showcased at the Paul Ricard Circuit on April 21, 2026. With manufacturers now tasked with further refining the car, the racing world eagerly awaits its competitive debut in the upcoming season.
