Subaru’s rallying legacy is set to continue with an unexpected contender: the Boxer Rally Spec.Z, a rally-spec version of the rear-wheel drive BRZ sports car. While the BRZ has competed in Japan’s Super GT series in heavily modified form, this marks its first official foray into rallying—a sport deeply tied to Subaru’s identity.
Subaru BRZ Rally Spec.Z Enters 2026 All-Japan Rally Championship
This week, Subaru announced that its factory team will debut the Boxer Rally Spec.Z in the third round of the 2026 All-Japan Rally Championship. The event is scheduled for May 8-10, 2026, in Nara Prefecture, located in south-central Honshu, Japan’s main island. The car will compete in the JN1 class, piloted by veteran driver Toshihiro Arai with co-driver Yuichiyo Ando.
Technical Specifications: AWD, Turbocharged 2.4L Boxer-Four
The Spec.Z retains the stock BRZ’s body shell but undergoes significant modifications for rally duty. Key upgrades include:
- All-wheel drive system replacing the road car’s rear-wheel drive layout
- 6-speed sequential gearbox for precise gear shifts
- Turbocharged 2.4-liter boxer-four engine, boosting power to approximately 276 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque
These figures represent a 48 hp increase and a 184 lb-ft torque boost over the U.S.-spec BRZ road car. Notably, the torque output is double that of the production model.
JP4 Compliance and Weight Optimization
The Spec.Z adheres to the JP4 regulations, the same ruleset governing Subaru’s current WRX S4 rally car. JP4 mandates a minimum curb weight of 2,866 pounds, a target the WRX S4 has struggled to meet. However, the lighter BRZ platform allowed Subaru to easily surpass this requirement.
To fine-tune the car’s balance, Subaru added ballast, which can be strategically distributed to optimize front/rear weight distribution and maintain a low center of gravity—critical for rally performance.
Rally-Ready Styling and Build
Visually, the Spec.Z embraces its rally roots with:
- Wing-like fender flares for enhanced wheel clearance
- Wider front air intake for improved cooling
- Large rear spoiler for aerodynamic downforce
- 18-inch rally wheels in a classic white finish
The result is a distinctive, aggressive look that balances the BRZ’s sporty aesthetics with functional rally modifications.
Subaru’s Rallying Future: A New Chapter
Subaru’s decision to enter a rear-wheel drive sports car in rallying reflects the brand’s willingness to innovate. Historically, all-wheel drive has dominated top-tier rally categories, pioneered by brands like Audi. While Toyota has explored rally concepts—such as the GR Corolla-based Celica homage—Subaru’s move with the BRZ adds a fresh dynamic to the sport.
Could other manufacturers follow suit? The aftermarket already offers rally-style body kits and suspension lifts, such as those from Kuhl Racing, but an official GR86 rally car from Toyota remains a possibility.
For now, all eyes will be on the Boxer Rally Spec.Z as it prepares to hit the stages in Nara Prefecture next May.
