Raiders coach Klint Kubiak has repeatedly emphasized his preference for not starting a rookie quarterback in Week 1. This stance led the team to sign veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins before selecting Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.

While sportsbooks favor Cousins to start in Week 1, the NFL has provided the Raiders with flexibility regarding Mendoza’s debut. The regular season begins with a Week 1 matchup against the Miami Dolphins on September 13, followed by games against the Los Angeles Chargers and New Orleans Saints.

The Dolphins are in a rebuilding phase, the Chargers’ defense has undergone changes with the departure of defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, and the Saints have combined for just 11 wins over the past two seasons. These factors could influence the Raiders’ decision on when to introduce Mendoza as a starter.

If the Raiders opt to delay Mendoza’s first start, a potential Week 12 matchup against the Cleveland Browns presents an opportunity. This game is followed by a bye week, providing additional time for adjustment. The Raiders’ late-season schedule includes games against the Chargers, Denver Broncos, Tennessee Titans, Arizona Cardinals, and Kansas City Chiefs.

The Raiders were one of five teams not assigned a primetime game in the 2026 season. This scheduling detail suggests the NFL may not highlight Mendoza’s potential debut in a primetime slot, regardless of when he takes the field.
