Audi Sport’s collection of restored retired race cars has become a coveted commodity among private collectors, triggering delivery delays for its exclusive ‘racing legends’ program. The surge in demand has created a backlog of orders, with global interest outpacing the workshop’s restoration capacity.
Rolf Michl, Managing Director of Audi Sport GmbH, confirmed that interest in the program has far exceeded expectations. Each vehicle undergoes a complete factory restoration to ensure it meets original track-ready specifications upon delivery. This meticulous process has resulted in a waiting list that now extends “well beyond the 2026 season.”
Audi’s Racing Legends Program: From Concept to Reality
The initiative began in 2024 with the sale of factory-backed race cars like the Audi R8 LMS GT3 EVO, inspired by the Gran Turismo film. By 2025, the program had evolved into a formal division within Audi Sport, catering to enthusiasts seeking authentic racing heritage.
Why the Demand for Retired Racers is Skyrocketing
Audi attributes the high demand to the resurgence of revival racing series, particularly those featuring the Class 1 era of DTM (1993–2020). This trend explains the rapid sales of three Audi RS 5 DTM models within a year. Unlike the roadgoing RS 5 Coupe, the racing version features a carbon fiber monocoque, extreme aerodynamics, and a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 610 hp (455 kW / 618 PS).
The program’s inventory also includes iconic LMP prototypes, such as the 2013 Audi R18 e-tron quattro, which has already been delivered to a private collection. This hybrid-powered machine combines a mid-mounted V6 TDI engine with a sophisticated hybrid system, a configuration that secured multiple victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Audi Sport’s Commitment to Authenticity and Support
Audi Sport engineers are currently restoring additional prototypes for sale, ensuring every component meets factory standards after enduring the rigors of professional racing. For owners who have already taken delivery, the team provides dedicated technical support, enabling them to experience the cars on the track rather than as static museum pieces.
2026 Season Highlights: Classic Races and Racing Legacy
The 2026 season will feature appearances in prestigious classic races, including Hockenheim, Le Mans, Nürburgring, and Red Bull Ring. At the iconic Circuit de la Sarthe, Audi will celebrate its endurance racing legacy by showcasing the V12 diesel-powered R10 TDI alongside the hybrid R18 e-tron quattro.
