The first-generation Audi TT, a design so revolutionary when it debuted, has now reached an age where restomodding makes sense. Dutch coachbuilder Niels van Roij Design, through its Autoforma division—known for crafting a Rolls-Royce Corniche shooting brake—has breathed new life into an early TT Roadster while honoring its iconic silhouette.
The one-off restomod draws inspiration from the 1995 Audi TTS Roadster concept, which foreshadowed the production TT convertible introduced in 1999. Autoforma took a step back from the production model’s changes, refining the design to evoke the purity of the original concept. The front bumper was flattened and fitted with more horizontal air intakes to emphasize width. New front-fender vents now house the side turn signals, and the windshield washer reservoir was relocated to the trunk to accommodate the tight engine bay.
This restomod fully embraces the roadster ethos. Autoforma replaced the folding roof with a sleek tonneau panel behind the seats, mirroring the 1995 concept. Side sills received a subtle intake ahead of the rear wheels, and the rear bumper integrates the tailpipes and diffuser, streamlining the exterior. Clip-on racing mirrors, removal of trunk-lid weld seams, and the elimination of the antenna and rear spoiler further enhance the clean aesthetic. Exposed screws now secure the new front-fender and side-sill intakes.
The TT sits on a lowered suspension, though Autoforma left the powertrain and mechanical components untouched. Weight savings from the tonneau panel and the use of carbon-fiber-backed materials for new exterior components reduce the load on the engine.
Nimbus Gray paint with a glossy pearlescent finish dominates the exterior, but the lower body, A-pillars, and windshield surround feature a matte finish. The brown leather interior adds a touch of sophistication. These changes are subtle, appealing primarily to purists and fans of the original Audi TT. The car was commissioned by Dutch designer Jos Baijens, who purchased a first-generation TT new in 1998.
For those with the budget, Autoforma is open to building a custom TT restomod. Meanwhile, Audi’s future electric sports car, inspired by the 2023 Concept C, may offer a modern alternative. The Concept C, unveiled last year, takes cues from the 1936 Auto Union Type C race car and the 2004 Audi A6 (C6 generation), yet retains subtle TT influences. Priced between the outgoing TT and the R8, it represents Audi’s next step in performance and design evolution.
