DoorDash enforces strict refund policies for customer complaints, requiring evidence—such as missing items, late deliveries, or improperly prepared food—before issuing refunds, often at the restaurant’s expense. However, the rise of AI-generated images has made verifiable proof harder to obtain, and one customer’s viral TikTok post demonstrates that even DoorDash’s anti-fraud measures have vulnerabilities.
How the AI Refund Trick Worked
A TikTok user named Starr (@mi5under5t00d) shared a video showing how she used AI to manipulate an image of her DoorDash order and secure a full refund. The post has since garnered over 4.4 million views and sparked widespread discussion.
The video begins with a real photo of Starr’s order: chicken wings, including one with a bite taken out of it. She then shows the same image edited with AI to make the bitten chicken wing appear raw. Finally, she displays a screenshot from her DoorDash app confirming a $39.24 credit issued for future orders.
The video’s caption reads: “Shout out to ChatGPT.”
Social Media Reacts to the Viral Refund Trick
While Starr’s post was intended as humor, social media users overwhelmingly criticized her actions. Many argued that her deception could negatively impact small businesses and delivery drivers who rely on DoorDash for income.
One commenter wrote:
“This gets people fired btw. Some people’s [lives] depend on DoorDash or Uber and [you’re] gonna get [them] fired over a few dollars? Selfish.”
Another user commented:
“This is honestly a disgusting thing to do. Why would you take advantage of small businesses?!”
DoorDash itself joined the conversation with a sarcastic response: “Oop should’ve blocked us!”
Starr replied: “Now why would I do that if my chicken was raw?”
In the video’s caption, Starr clarified that her original order had issues, including two missing items and cold chicken. However, the claim of raw chicken was entirely fabricated.
DoorDash’s Anti-Fraud Measures and AI Challenges
DoorDash has policies to protect merchants from fraudulent claims, including flagging users who repeatedly request refunds and manually reviewing suspicious cases. However, as AI-generated images become increasingly realistic, even manual reviews may fail to detect fraud.
Despite its viral response, DoorDash is not anti-AI. The company actively incorporates AI into its operations, including a recently announced suite of AI tools for merchants. One controversial use of AI by DoorDash is enhancing and editing food images submitted by customers, as explained on its Photo FAQs page.
