Lotus has unveiled plans to launch a hybrid supercar, codenamed Type 135, in 2028. The upcoming model will mark the brand’s return to the supercar segment with a V8 powertrain and over 986 hp (1,000 PS), departing from its previous all-electric focus.
The announcement is part of Lotus’ new business strategy, Focus 2030, which outlines the company’s plans for the next four years. The Type 135 will go on sale in 2028, though details remain limited at this stage.
One of the most striking features of the Type 135 is its hybrid V8 powertrain, which is expected to deliver exceptional performance. A single teaser image reveals the rear of the supercar, showcasing slim LED taillights positioned above a pair of round exhaust tailpipes. The Lotus logo is prominently displayed in gold lettering.
While Lotus has not confirmed the engine supplier, several automakers are potential candidates. Mercedes-AMG currently supplies four-cylinder engines for the Emira sports car and is developing a new flat-plane crank V8 based on the engine used in the latest Mercedes S-Class. Alternatively, Toyota could supply the V8, as it provides V6 engines for the Emira and recently introduced a twin-turbo V8 hybrid in the GR series, though with lower output.
Autocar reports that Mercedes-AMG is likely the chosen supplier, suggesting the powertrain will be a conventional hybrid system, similar to the Corvette E-Ray and Porsche 911 Turbo, rather than a plug-in hybrid like the Ferrari 296. This approach aims to keep weight low, aligning with Lotus’ traditional lightweight philosophy.
Esprit Badge Revival?
The Type 135 could potentially revive the iconic Esprit badge, which has not appeared on a new Lotus since 2004. However, the company has only confirmed the codename, Type 135, at this stage.
Shift in Product Mix: Hybrid Dominance
Lotus is adjusting its product strategy, moving away from an all-electric focus. Under the new plan, the brand will produce a mix of 60% hybrid and 40% battery-electric vehicles (BEVs). This shift comes after the company initially pledged to go fully electric.
Key to this strategy is the introduction of the X-Hybrid powertrain, unveiled on the Eletre X in China earlier this year. The powertrain delivers 939 hp (952 PS / 700 kW) from a 2.0-liter engine and is set to arrive in Europe in the fourth quarter of this year alongside the existing EV version. However, the related Emeya sedan will not receive the hybrid kit.
U.S. Market Focus: Sports Cars Only
Lotus has also clarified its U.S. market strategy, stating that only its sports cars will be available in the country. This means the Eletre SUV and Emeya sedan will not be sold in the U.S., though the brand will continue to focus on its core sports car lineup.
Lotus Emira: Lightest and Most Powerful Version Coming Soon
To reinforce its lightweight credentials, Lotus is investing further in the Emira. The brand will unveil its most powerful and lightest version of the Emira in the coming weeks, signaling a return to its roots in performance and agility.
