Seth Meyers Mocks Trump’s Iran War Naming Tactics as ‘HBO Max’ Strategy

After months of labeling the conflict in Iran as a war, the Trump administration abruptly shifted its rhetoric, avoiding the term entirely. On his “A Closer Look” segment, NBC host Seth Meyers criticized the administration’s tactics, comparing them to the ever-changing names of HBO streaming services.

Meyers Highlights Trump’s Shifting Terminology

During Wednesday’s episode, Meyers mocked the administration’s use of phrases like “an excursion,” “a little journey,” and most recently, “a mini war.”

“Awww! Well, that’s fun! It’s a little mini-war. It can’t be illegal if it’s just a little ol’ thing,”

Meyers joked before launching into a Trump impersonation. “I call it World War .003. It’s just a little, my beautiful little war.”

Operation Epic Fury Becomes Project Freedom

Earlier this week, the administration renamed its military operation in Iran from “Operation Epic Fury” to “Project Freedom,” an initiative aimed at escorting ships through the Strait of Hormuz.

“That’s right. They’re going from ‘Operation Epic Fury’ to ‘Project Freedom.’ They’re just renaming it. They’re treating the war like it’s HBO,”

Meyers said.

He added, “They went from HBO, to HBO Go, to HBO NOW to HBO Max, to Max, back HBO Max. Although, if you ask me, a much simpler name would just be ‘the one that has Game of Thrones.’”

Meyers also noted that Trump had already paused “Project Freedom” before it gained traction.

Why the Name Changes? Trump Admits the Strategy

Meyers explained the administration’s reasoning, pointing to a recent admission by Trump. The president stated that the military actions are called “military operations” to avoid legal repercussions.

“They call it a military operation, because that way, you don’t have a war, you don’t have legal problems,”

Meyers paraphrased Trump.

He sarcastically added,

“You don’t not break the law if you use different words for the illegal act. ‘You can put the cuffs away officer, my grandma wasn’t murdered. She’s just sleeping in a backyard dirt hole!’”
