Subaru has finally answered enthusiasts’ long-standing call: “Put a turbo in the BRZ!” The Japanese automaker has unveiled the Boxer Rally Spec.Z, a high-performance, turbocharged, all-wheel-drive variant of the BRZ designed exclusively for rally competition.
Developed in collaboration with Subaru Tecnica International (STI), the Boxer Rally Spec.Z is built to compete in the JN-1 category of the 2026 All Japan Rally Championship. While it retains the BRZ’s core architecture, the car features extensive modifications, including:
- A new front bumper with a prominent air intake for improved cooling
- Vents integrated into the hood to manage engine bay temperatures
- A widebody kit for enhanced stability and aggressive styling
- A large, STI-developed rear wing (offered as an accessory in some markets)
The modifications are not merely cosmetic—they are functional upgrades tailored for the demands of rally racing.
Powertrain and Performance: More Power Than the WRX
The heart of the Boxer Rally Spec.Z is a turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four engine, an evolution of the stock BRZ’s naturally aspirated powerplant. This engine delivers over 280 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, significantly outpacing the current BRZ’s 228 horsepower and 284 pound-feet of torque.
Power is sent to all four wheels through a six-speed sequential transmission, a configuration not available in the standard BRZ. Subaru emphasized that all-wheel drive is critical for rally performance, positioning the Spec.Z as the brand’s “ultimate rally weapon.”
Suspension, Brakes, and Chassis: Engineering for the Rough Stuff
To harness the increased power, the Boxer Rally Spec.Z features a high-performance suspension system developed jointly by Subaru and STI. The setup includes KYB components and Endless brake parts, ensuring precise handling and reliable stopping power. While these parts are not off-the-shelf, the tuning and development were conducted in-house by Subaru and STI engineers.
The collaboration extended to optimizing the suspension geometry and chassis layout, resulting in a vehicle that weighs less than the WRX S4 and boasts a lower center of gravity—key advantages in rally conditions.
Rally Debut and Production Plans
The Subaru Boxer Rally Spec.Z is set to make its competitive debut at the YUHO Rally Asuka in May 2026. As of now, there are no indications that the coupe will spawn a production model. However, given Subaru’s history of bringing racing innovations to the road, enthusiasts can still hope for a future road-legal version.
