Diesel Pump UK, a specialist in engine swaps, is liquidating part of its project car collection, including a meticulously built 1952 GMC pickup that has been in development for seven years. The centerpiece of the build is a Mercedes-Benz OM606 3.0-liter inline-six diesel engine, a favorite among tuners often compared to the legendary Toyota 2JZ for its tuning potential.
The truck, nicknamed the “Notorious GMC,” is now on the market for £60,000 (approximately $81,500 at current exchange rates).
Twin-Forced Induction Setup Delivers 600 Horsepower
After extensive experimentation, Luke Dale, owner of Diesel Pump UK, settled on a turbocharger and supercharger combination to maximize performance. The setup delivers an impressive 600 horsepower while maintaining fuel efficiency of up to 30 mpg, according to Dale. The truck is even capable of performing wheelies—though Dale notes they work best when the bed is loaded with junk.
Each forced induction system has its own intercooler: the supercharger handles low-rpm power delivery, while the turbocharger takes over at higher engine speeds. A passive valve manages the switch between the two systems, and fuel delivery is handled by Diesel Pump UK’s custom billet injector pump.
Built for Performance and Reliability
The powertrain is paired with a 4L80 four-speed automatic transmission modified by Gearstar and a Currie 9-inch rear end with a limited-slip differential to ensure durability under extreme power. The engine bay showcases a striking combination of billet and chrome components, a necessity given the OM606’s size relative to the vintage GMC’s engine bay.
Restomod Aesthetics and Modern Comforts
The truck’s exterior blends retro charm with modern enhancements. The sheet metal features hand-painted graphics in a vintage style, while retaining some original patina. The interior has been updated in a restomod fashion, featuring:
- A revised bench seat with added side bolsters
- A dashboard equipped with modern digital gauges
- Sound-deadening material on the firewall to reduce noise
Dale opted to keep the suspension stock but upgraded to five-lug hubs to accommodate the new rear axle and Wildwood disc brakes.
More Than Just a GMC: Diesel Pump UK’s Other Project
Diesel Pump UK isn’t just selling the “Notorious GMC.” The company is also offering a Land Rover Defender powered by a backhoe engine, adding to its lineup of unconventional project cars.
Why This Build Stands Out
The 1952 GMC pickup represents a rare blend of classic aesthetics and cutting-edge performance. Despite its high-power output, the build remains efficient and retains a level of authenticity that appeals to both diesel enthusiasts and restomod collectors. Even with shipping costs factored in, the price is competitive compared to many restomods on the market.
