Porsche is building a stockpile inventory of the gas-powered Macan SUV ahead of the end of its production run this summer. The automaker will halt assembly of the internal combustion engine (ICE) model at its Leipzig, Germany, factory, but will continue producing units at full capacity to create a buffer stock.
This strategy aims to meet lingering demand in key markets like North America, where the gas Macan outsold its electric replacement in early 2026. Production of the ICE-powered SUV is scheduled to conclude in summer 2026, though showrooms will remain stocked with leftover inventory well into 2027.
Gas Macan Still Outsells Electric Version Despite EV Push
In the first quarter of 2026, the original Macan posted 10,130 U.S. sales, compared to 8,079 for the all-electric Macan, which launched in 2024 on the PPE platform shared with the Audi Q6 e-tron. The gas model’s underpinnings date back to 2013, with facelifts in 2019 and 2021 helping maintain its relevance.
The gas Macan’s continued popularity comes despite its inability to comply with new cybersecurity regulations in the European Union, where it was effectively banned in spring 2024. Retrofitting the aging platform to meet these standards was deemed cost-prohibitive, accelerating its phase-out.
Porsche’s Electrification Strategy Shifts Amid Market Realities
Initially, Porsche planned to fully replace the ICE Macan with the electric version. However, market conditions—particularly strong demand for the gas model—prompted a reevaluation. The automaker is now developing a new SUV to launch alongside the electric Macan, with a targeted arrival in 2028.
This successor will reportedly use the Audi Q5’s Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) architecture, offering both gasoline and hybrid powertrain options. Until then, Porsche is relying on its existing stockpile to bridge the gap, ensuring showrooms remain supplied.
What’s Next for the Macan Lineup?
- Current electric Macan: Available since 2024 on the PPE platform.
- Gas Macan production: Ends in summer 2026; stockpile extends availability into 2027.
- Next-gen SUV: Expected in 2028 with PPC architecture, offering gasoline and hybrid options.
