For drivers who rely on off-road vehicles for daily commuting, BFGoodrich’s Trail Terrain T/A has long been a familiar choice. Positioned between the rugged KO2/KO3 and highway-focused all-weather tires, it delivers a balanced blend of off-road capability and on-road comfort. While not designed for extreme off-road enthusiasts, its Three-Peak Snowflake (3PMSF) rating and pavement-friendly tread make it ideal for those who log most of their miles on improved roads.
Now, BFGoodrich has introduced an upgraded version: the Trail Terrain T/A+. Retaining the original’s naming convention for clarity, the new tire focuses on three key improvements: all-weather traction, longevity, and fuel efficiency.
Wet-Weather Traction Gets a Boost
BFGoodrich prioritized enhancing the Trail Terrain’s wet-weather performance without sacrificing its off-road strengths. Unlike highway-oriented all-season tires, all-terrain tires like the Trail Terrain feature zig-zagging circumferential grooves that improve off-road grip but reduce water-shedding efficiency. To address this, engineers focused on the tire’s compound formulation.
By increasing silica content, BFGoodrich made the contact patch grippier, resulting in a 10% improvement in wet grip, according to the company’s marketing materials. This adjustment ensures better traction in rainy conditions while maintaining the tire’s off-road capabilities.
Longer Lifespan and Better Fuel Economy
The new compound doesn’t just improve wet grip—it also enhances durability. BFGoodrich claims the Trail Terrain T/A+ offers up to 25% better wear performance compared to its predecessor, despite maintaining a 660 treadwear rating. Additionally, the updated formulation reduces rolling resistance by 5%, which translates to improved fuel efficiency.
Remarkably, BFGoodrich has kept the price point consistent with the outgoing Trail Terrain T/A. Early retail listings suggest prices range from $200 for smaller sizes to over $300 for larger fitments.
Availability and Sizing
The Trail Terrain T/A+ will launch in sizes from 16" to 22" in June, with additional options—including a 15" size—becoming available in August.
BFGoodrich provided a set of the new tires for testing on a 2011 Jeep Wrangler. Installation is underway, and first impressions will be shared in an upcoming review.
