Ford Motor Company and China’s Geely Group reportedly explored a partnership to bring Chinese vehicle technology to the U.S. market. However, these discussions stalled as political pressure against Chinese automakers in America intensified.

Ford has publicly stated that any collaboration allowing Geely to enter the U.S. would contradict its stance on protecting the domestic market. Currently, Ford and Geely are in active discussions to collaborate in Europe, where the partnership could yield mutual benefits.

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, discussions about a U.S. partnership began over a year ago. These talks included the possibility of Geely licensing its technology to Ford. At one stage, the collaboration envisioned Ford utilizing Geely’s vehicle platforms—structural foundations used to build multiple models—for future vehicles in the U.S. However, these plans reportedly fell apart due to mounting political opposition.

The proposed partnership would have been one of the most significant collaborations between Detroit and China on American soil. Geely, China’s second-largest automaker after BYD, owns major global brands such as Volvo Cars and Polestar. The company also showcased its Galaxy M9 EV at CES 2024, signaling its ambitions to expand into the U.S. market.

Instead of the U.S., the focus has shifted to Europe, where Geely could potentially use Ford’s plant near Valencia, Spain. This arrangement would help Geely avoid higher tariffs on Chinese imports while providing Ford with a productive use for its excess factory capacity. The U.S., however, remains a far more complex market for such collaborations.

Ford has spent the past year warning about the threat posed by Chinese automakers to the global auto industry. CEO Jim Farley has repeatedly emphasized the need for a strategy to prevent Chinese-built vehicles from flooding the U.S. market. A Ford spokesperson told The Wall Street Journal that assisting a Chinese automaker in gaining access to the U.S. would directly contradict the company’s position. The spokesperson stated that Ford’s commitment to protecting the domestic market is "absolute."

Despite Ford’s public opposition, the fact that the company even considered such a partnership underscores the seriousness with which Detroit views China’s technological advancements in the automotive sector.
