Subaru has unveiled the Boxer Rally Spec.Z, a purpose-built rally car based on the BRZ coupe, marking the brand’s return to the Japanese Rally Championship (JRC) with a machine that blends competition performance with showroom appeal.
The Boxer Rally Spec.Z departs from Subaru’s traditional WRX-based rally strategy, instead transforming the BRZ into an all-wheel-drive (AWD) rally weapon. While JRC regulations do not mandate homologation specials, this rally machine is unlikely to inspire a limited-production road version.
Design: Aggressive Bodykit and Racing-Ready Features
The two-door coupe is fitted with a custom rally bodykit that includes:
- A redesigned front bumper with an enlarged grille
- A vented hood for improved engine cooling
- High-clearance front and rear fenders
- A fixed rear wing for aerodynamic downforce
- Lexan windows to reduce weight
- Smaller mirrors for improved aerodynamics
- A roof-mounted scoop for cabin ventilation
- A striking racing livery
The interior has been stripped down and reinforced with an FIA-compliant roll cage for safety.
Dimensions: Wider Than the Road-Going BRZ
The rally-spec BRZ measures 1,820 mm (71.7 inches) in width, an increase over the production model. It retains the 4,265 mm (167.9-inch) length and 2,575 mm (101.4-inch) wheelbase of the standard BRZ.
Powertrain: Turbocharged 2.4L Boxer Engine with AWD
The heart of the Boxer Rally Spec.Z is a turbocharged 2.4-liter Boxer engine (FA24), sourced from the WRX. This engine delivers over 276 hp (206 kW / 280 PS) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque—significantly more power than the naturally aspirated engine in the production BRZ.
Power is sent to all four wheels via a six-speed sequential transmission and a direct-drive AWD system, providing the grip needed for JRC’s demanding stages. The rally car rides on 18-inch Work aluminum wheels shod in Advan tires, with braking handled by four-piston calipers. The suspension and steering rack layouts are unique to the rally car, drawing from Subaru’s experience with the WRX S4 predecessor.
Subaru engineers emphasize the car’s balance between “sharp cornering performance and high-speed stability.”
Weight and Performance: Optimized for JRC Regulations
The JP4 vehicle regulations require a minimum weight of 1,300 kg (2,866 lbs). The BRZ-based rally car meets this target, allowing Subaru to achieve an ideal weight distribution and a lower center of gravity—unlike the WRX S4, which struggled to meet the weight requirement.
Debut and Competition Schedule
The Boxer Rally Spec.Z will make its competition debut at the Yuho Rally Asuka from May 8–10, 2024, fielded by the Subaru Team Arai.
