Subaru has unveiled the Boxer Rally Spec.Z, a high-performance rally version of the BRZ coupe, marking the brand’s return to the Japanese Rally Championship (JRC) with a turbocharged all-wheel-drive machine. Unlike previous JRC entries, this model is based on the BRZ rather than the WRX, delivering the performance enthusiasts have long requested.

The Boxer Rally Spec.Z is a purpose-built competition vehicle, not intended for public sale. JRC regulations do not mandate homologation specials, so Subaru does not plan to offer a limited-production road version.

Design and Specifications

Visually, the rally car is equipped with a custom bodykit featuring a redesigned front bumper with a larger grille, a vented hood, high-clearance front and rear fenders, and a fixed rear wing. Additional modifications include lexan windows, smaller mirrors, a roof-mounted scoop, and a racing livery. The interior has been stripped down and fitted with an FIA-compliant roll cage.

The rally car is wider than the production BRZ, measuring 1,820 mm (71.7 inches), while retaining the original 4,265 mm (167.9-inch) length and 2,575 mm (101.4-inch) wheelbase.

Powertrain and Performance

The highlight of the Boxer Rally Spec.Z is its powertrain. It borrows the 2.4-liter turbocharged Boxer engine (FA24) from the WRX, a significant upgrade over the naturally-aspirated engine in the production BRZ. The engine has been tuned to produce over 276 hp (206 kW / 280 PS) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque.

Unlike the rear-wheel-drive BRZ, the rally car features a six-speed sequential transmission with a direct-drive all-wheel-drive system, sending power to all four wheels. This setup, combined with an overhauled chassis, is designed to handle the demanding stages of the JRC.

The car rides on 18-inch Work aluminum wheels with Advan tires and is equipped with four-piston calipers for braking. The suspension geometry and steering rack layout are unique to the rally car, drawing from Subaru’s experience with the WRX S4 predecessor. Engineers claim the setup achieves a balance between “sharp cornering performance and high-speed stability.”

Weight and Competition Debut

Under JP4 regulations, the minimum weight for rally cars is 1,300 kg (2,866 lbs). The BRZ-based rally car easily meets this requirement, giving Subaru flexibility to optimize weight distribution and leverage the coupe’s lower center of gravity.

Subaru has confirmed the Boxer Rally Spec.Z will make its competition debut at the Yuho Rally Asuka, scheduled for May 8 to 10.
