John Penn doesn’t just love his job—he excels at it. As the owner of JP Transport in Orleans, Indiana, Penn specializes in furniture deliveries across the southwestern United States, from Texas to California. His passion for freight delivery earned him Overdrive’s 2025 Trucker of the Year award, a recognition rooted in his relentless pursuit of fuel efficiency.

In a recent video interview with Overdrive, Penn revealed that his 2019 Freightliner Cascadia achieves an impressive 10.46 miles per gallon over 216,000 miles. While that figure may not impress Prius drivers, it’s exceptional for a semi-truck, where the average fuel economy typically ranges between six and seven MPG.

Penn’s success stems from a combination of aerodynamic modifications and disciplined driving habits. His truck’s setup is meticulously optimized for efficiency, starting with the trailer. Since purchasing it in 2015, Penn has made several enhancements, including installing a Transtex Edge Elite Aero kit. This single modification alone is estimated to save 12 gallons of fuel for every 1,000 miles driven.

Penn’s approach to aerodynamics is all about eliminating drag. He closely monitors how air flows around his rig, using rain spray patterns under the trailer as a guide. “Dirty air is the enemy,” he explains, and nearly every tweak he’s made targets this issue. From trimming mud flaps for better streamlining to relocating the license plate to the trailer’s bumper, no adjustment is too small to matter.

Even the truck itself has been optimized. Penn removed the hood mirrors to reduce drag, leaving the rest of the modifications to the trailer. Despite his truck’s robust 455-horsepower Detroit DD15 engine, Penn prioritizes reducing strain on every component. “The easier this truck can pull a trailer down the road, the longer it’s going to last,” he says. “You can take that from the engine, the transmission, the rear end—even the tires. Everything that’s rolling easy will last longer.”

Penn’s driving style is equally focused on efficiency. When asked about speed, he describes his approach as “as slow as possible, as fast as necessary.” He avoids idling his truck to run the HVAC when parked, citing the high cost of diesel and the wear it places on the emissions system. In fact, he claims he’s only needed a crosswind to stay cool in the sleeper “only a time or two.”

Penn’s dedication to efficiency extends beyond his truck’s performance. His disciplined habits and innovative modifications have not only earned him industry recognition but also set a benchmark for fuel economy in the trucking industry. As Overdrive’s Trucker of the Year, Penn’s story is a testament to how passion and precision can transform a routine job into an extraordinary achievement.
