U.S. New Car Inventory Trends: March 2025 Update
Total new vehicle inventory in the United States rose to 2.89 million units in March 2025, despite a sharp decline in days of supply. The nationwide average dropped to 79 days, down from 96 days in February and 94 days in January, according to Cox Automotive data.
This total represents a 1.3% increase from February and a 6.1% rise compared to March 2024. The year-over-year comparison is influenced by a surge in purchases in March 2024, which temporarily reduced inventory levels.
Chrysler’s Inventory Surges Past National Average
Chrysler’s inventory remains a significant outlier, with days of supply exceeding twice the national average. In March, Chrysler’s inventory stood at 158 days or more, despite offering only two models: the Pacifica and the Voyager (a simplified version of the Pacifica). The Pacifica recently received a facelift but is not slated for replacement by an all-new model in the near term.
Chrysler is not alone in facing high inventory levels. Other Stellantis brands also report elevated days of supply:
- Dodge: 140 days
- Ram: 138 days
- Jeep: 127 days
Among non-Stellantis brands, Mini leads with 123 days, followed by Mitsubishi (119 days), Buick (114 days), and Volkswagen (109 days).
Toyota and Lexus Maintain Low Inventory Levels
On the opposite end of the spectrum, Toyota and Lexus both report just 36 days of supply, the lowest among all brands. Other brands with below-average inventory include:
- Porsche: 78 days
- Subaru: 77 days
- Cadillac: 76 days
- Kia: 75 days
- Chevrolet and Infiniti: 67 days
- Honda: 52 days
- Audi: 47 days
Sales Rebound and Pricing Trends
New car sales rebounded strongly in March, reaching 1.13 million units, up from 831,191 in February. Despite the sales increase, the average new vehicle listing price dipped slightly to $48,667.
Dealers are increasingly relying on incentives to sustain sales momentum. In March, average incentive spending per vehicle rose to $3,541, or 7.2% of the average transaction price.
