Pininfarina and JAS Motorsport Unveil the Honda NSX Tensei at Milano Design Week
The Honda NSX Tensei, a restomod project by Pininfarina and JAS Motorsport, has been one of the standout highlights of 2025. Now, the team is offering a deeper look at this remarkable car during Milano Design Week.
Redesigned Proportions for a Modern Classic
The Tensei’s proportions have been meticulously reworked to create a more aggressive and balanced silhouette. Compared to the original NSX, the Tensei features:
- A longer wheelbase
- A wider track
- A shorter rear overhang
- A lower stance
- Larger wheels
Lead designer Dimitri Vicedomini noted that once these changes were finalized, "the car almost designed itself."
The widened rear shoulders and flared fenders introduce what Pininfarina describes as "triangular gestures in plan view," a signature design language reminiscent of iconic models like the Ferrari 288 GTO, also penned by Pininfarina.
The result is an NSX that has clearly transformed since its appearance on the cover of Motor Trend in 1989, now exuding a muscular and refined presence. Key design elements from the original, including pop-up headlights and an integral rear spoiler, are retained but modernized for the 2026 model.
Pure V6 Power and a Six-Speed Manual
Under the carbon fiber body lies a naturally aspirated V6 engine, rooted in the original NSX’s architecture but engineered for enhanced power, torque, and responsiveness. This powertrain is paired with a six-speed manual transmission, delivering a driving experience free from turbos, electrification, or paddle shifters.
"The kind of powertrain setup that’ll make modern supercar buyers feel like they backed the wrong horse, even if the Tensei delivers far fewer horses."
While the Tensei may not match the horsepower of contemporary supercars, its focus on driver engagement and mechanical purity sets it apart.
Interior Refinement and Bespoke Customization
Pininfarina has also focused on the Tensei’s interior, aiming to preserve the original NSX’s driver-focused ergonomics and visibility while elevating "perceived quality." Expect bespoke switchgear and premium materials, with hopes for analog gauges over digital displays.
Honoring a Historic Collaboration
The Tensei’s story is deeply rooted in Honda’s history. Pininfarina and Honda first collaborated in 1984 on the HP-X concept, a mid-engined sports car that laid the groundwork for the NSX. This restomod project continues that legacy, blending classic design with modern craftsmanship.
The Tensei will be hand-built at JAS Motorsport’s atelier in Arluno, near Milan, with bespoke customization options handled at Pininfarina’s facility in Cambiano, Turin.
Full Reveal Scheduled for 2026
The full reveal of the Honda NSX Tensei is set for later in 2026. Details on pricing and production numbers are still under wraps, but enthusiasts can look forward to a car that pays homage to Honda’s heritage while embracing modern performance and design.
