Yelp Expands AI Capabilities to Simplify Local Service Bookings
Yelp has introduced AI-powered search and booking features, allowing users to schedule haircuts, medical appointments, and food deliveries directly through its platform. The update integrates partnerships with DoorDash, Zocdoc, and Vagaro, enabling seamless transactions from Yelp listings or via the new Yelp Assistant.
Previously, Yelp users could request quotes from a wide range of local businesses, including home and auto repair professionals, beauty experts, and more. The Yelp Assistant, now accessible via a dedicated tab in the app, aims to transform Yelp from a review platform into a comprehensive destination for finding answers and completing service bookings.
"We would like consumers to reconceive Yelp not just as a place where they read reviews, but as a place where they can actually find answers and complete their actions."
How the Yelp Assistant Works
In a demonstration for Fast Company, Kuduvalli Ramesh showcased the Yelp Assistant’s ability to locate businesses and places tailored to user needs. For example, it can identify dog-friendly parks or restaurants suitable for a date night, presenting results with brief explanations derived from reviews and company websites. The assistant also handles follow-up questions, such as parking availability at a dog park or vegetarian options at a restaurant, pulling details from reviews and photos.
Transparency and User Confidence
Akhil Kuduvalli Ramesh emphasized the narrative-driven approach of the AI assistant, stating:
"What’s particularly interesting to a consumer about it is the fact that every answer has a narrative. The narration brings a sense of transparency, and it also gives the user confidence as to why they’re seeing what they’re seeing, and it gets them excited."
Yelp’s Financial Performance and Market Position
Yelp reported a 4% year-over-year increase in net revenue for the previous year, reaching a record $1.46 billion. Net income for the same period was $146 million, according to February regulatory filings. The majority of Yelp’s revenue, $948 million, came from advertising by service businesses, compared to $444 million from its "restaurants, retail, and other" category.
As competition intensifies, with consumers increasingly turning to AI tools or social media influencers for local business recommendations, Yelp is leveraging its extensive review database and business partnerships to maintain its position as a trusted resource. A recent survey conducted by Morning Consult revealed that while 65% of Americans have used AI search tools in the past six months, over half find these tools restrictive, often verifying results through additional sources like review platforms and news sites.
