Smart has officially unveiled the Concept #2, a compact electric vehicle (EV) that previews the successor to the iconic Fortwo. The urban-focused EV boasts a targeted range of 186 miles (300 km), more than double the range of the discontinued EQ Fortwo. The production version of the Concept #2 will make its global debut at the Paris Motor Show.

Designed by Mercedes-Benz, the Concept #2 represents a natural evolution of the EQ Fortwo, which was discontinued in 2024. The model features a familiar two-door silhouette with a short hood and large wheels positioned at the corners. Key design highlights include aggressive LED headlights, clean surfacing, and futuristic wheels with transparent aero covers in light-colored rubber. Additional standout features are trick DRLs with the "#2" lettering, leather straps replacing traditional door handles, and a blocked grille resembling a luxury suitcase. At the rear, a small matrix screen is capable of displaying various messages.

While these elements may be toned down for the production model, Smart has confirmed that the Concept #2 measures 2,792 mm (109.9 inches) in length, making it the largest interpretation of a two-door city car in the brand’s history. It is 292 mm (11.5 inches) longer than the original Smart and 97 mm (3.8 inches) longer than the last generation of the EQ Fortwo. Despite its size increase, the new Smart remains the smallest contestant in Europe’s A-Segment, being 840 mm (33 inches) shorter than the Fiat 500e and 997 mm (39 inches) shorter than the Renault Twingo E-Tech. In fact, the new Smart is closer in size to heavy quadricycles like the Citroen Ami and the Fiat Topolino than traditional cars.

New Underpinnings and Powertrain

Under the skin, the Concept #2 rides on a new Electric Compact Architecture (ECA), developed in-house by Smart. Given that Smart is co-owned by Mercedes and Geely, it is likely that the platform incorporates technology from the Chinese automaker. The #2 will be available exclusively with an electric powertrain, similar to the #1 and #3 models, unlike the larger #5 and #6, which also offer plug-in hybrid options.

While Smart has not yet released detailed specifications, the brand has confirmed a targeted range of around 186 miles (300 km), significantly surpassing the 135 km (84 miles) range of the EQ Fortwo. The battery is designed to charge from 10-80% in under 20 minutes and will support Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functions. The #2 is expected to retain the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) layout of its rear-engined predecessors.

Interior and Production Details

The presentation did not include photos of the interior, but Smart has hinted that the EV-dedicated platform will offer a more spacious two-seater cabin. The interior is also expected to be more premium than previous models. Further details about the production version, including pricing and availability, are yet to be announced.
